SUPPLY SHIP ARNEB
Arrival At Lyttelton
The American polar supply ship Arneb reached Lyttelton yesterday afternoon on its way to the Antarctic from the United States. The vessel is an attack cargo ship, a unit in the Atlantic flee: amphibious force, and it will be in its third consecutive season’s work in the Antarctic. The Arneb left Norfolk, Virginia, on November 28 aqd passed through Panama on December 8. In 23 days it steamed 8000 miles non-stop across uncharted waters of the South Pacific Ocean, conducting special scientific studies for the National Academy of Sciences and the International Geophysical Year Committee. The vessel searched for the elusive Yosemite Rock and its reefs, marked on navigation charts as reported in 1903 and 1908 buc not having been reported sighted since. A team of trained lookouts manned posts day and night as the ship sailed directly over the charted locations. There was no sign of the features. The Arneb carries supplies, equipment and reliefs for two research stations—at Cape Hallett and on the Knox Coast—that it helped to build last season. The ship dropped anchor in the outer harbour a few minutes before 3 p.m. yesterday. It will move to a berth in the port itself some time today.
