PARKING IN STOCKHOLM
“Brides” Watch For Offenders
“Parking brides” is the name given to the Swedish girls now employed by the Stockholm Municipal Traffic Department in the country’s capital city to patrol the streets.
Their job is to catch motorists leaving their cars in no parking areas and to check the official parking meters to make sure that the fee has been paid and to issue a summons if it has not.
The appointment of “parking brides” has made it more difficult for motorists to get away with minor parking offences, such as exceeding the time limit for a few minutes. A motorist might come face to face with one of the uniformed girls, in her bluegreen. brass-button tunic and jaunty glengarry cap, just when he has committed a slight breach The girls have sharp eyes and are keen to find culprits.
An irritated motorist recently wrote to a Stockholm newspaper complaining that in his district the girls hide in doorways, watch drivers leave their cars in a forbidden area then dart out to fix a parking slip as soon as the rar owner has gone out of sight. The writer said that this kind of thing was not sporting. Patrolling policemen at least gave a warning if they saw you park incorrectly, he said.
