RACING Motueka-Beau Revere Win Double At Oamaru

(From 'Out Own Reporter) OAMARU, January 2. Motueka, winner of the Waikouaiti Cup on Wednesday, improved a solid record by winning the President’s Handicap, the main race at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting, held in showery weather today. His only challenger near the end was his bracketed-mate Tamarisk, which ran him to a neck. It was an all-Riccarton finish; Keep Time finished third.

Motueka carried top-weight of 9-0, including a rehandicap of 61b for his Waikouaiti Cup win. He has won three races this season for Mr J. MacG. Inglis, for whom he is trained at Riccarton by J. S. Shaw. Each time he has been ridden by R. W. Gould. Beau Revere had well-earned success in the Flying Handicap, the second leg of the double., Mr H. M. Coutts’s five-year-old Beau gelding was clear going into the last furlong and just lasted to beat the eighth favourite, Count Aven, by half a head. Beau Revere was runner-up in two of his three earlier races on the holiday circuit. At Waikouaiti he beat all but Purser, the beaten favourite in today’s race. Purser was last away, put in a big run to get to the front, then faded to fourth.

Holders of 2517 5s tickets on the Motueka (bracketed Tamarisk) and Beau Revere combination received £l2 6s 6d for £l.

The attendance was affected by the showery weather. The track was soft. The on-course totalisator turnover was £26,288 15s, including £2467 5s on the double, compared with £26,485 last year. President’s Handicap Motueka, and his faster-finish-ing bracketed-mate Tamarisk, had the finish of the President’s Handicap to themselves. Motueka, the first to challenge the leader, Keep Time, in the straight, lasted to win by a neck.

Motueka worked up speed quickly from the inside barrier position and R. W. Gould eased him in a trailing position behind Loyal Chief going to the mile. Tamarisk was then close behind Motueka on the inner, but lost two or three places when some of the others improved wider out going along the back.

Her Ex was alongside Loyal Chief in the lead at the half mile, and Keep Time, Goldwyn, Coin’s

Edge, Bon Soir, and Motueka were close behind. Inside the next furlong Keep Time ran clear and came to the straight galloping strongly clear of Her Ex. Motueka and Tamarisk were moving forward behind Her Ex and Loyal Chief was dropping out of the picture. Motueka mastered Keep Time after a short struggle inside the furlong, and established a lead that Tamarisk reduced considerably, but just failed to close. Keep Time was a length back third, and two lengths and a half clear of Her Ex. Loyal Chief was a weakening fifth, a length back, two lengths ahead of Royal PaL Column and Goldwyn were almost in line next, and were followed in by Grey Light, Bon Soir, and Coin’s Edge. Deserved Win Beau Revere rounded off the day’s double when he narrowly won the Flying Handicap. He was clear just inside the last furlong, but just lasted by half a head from the strongly-finishing Count Aven. Pack Drill, another solid finisher, was half a length back third. The favourite Purser got the worst of the start He raised the hopes of his backers by putting in a big run from the tail of the field to the front drawing clear three furlongs and a half out but Beau Revere stayed close behind to the straight and had Purser’s measure going to the furlong. It appeared likely then that the Orari sprinter would win untested, but closer to home he was all out to cope with Count Aven’s resolute challenge. Count Aven had only two runners behind him three furlongs out, and his strong finish to reach a place was the performance of an early winner. Pack Drill was also nearer last than first at the three furlongs. He finished two lengths and a half ahead of the weakening Purser. Copperfield was two more lengths back fifth, a length ahead of Silver King and Russleigh. Next were Renway and Seven Seas. Apart from Purser, Russleigh was the slowest beginner.
