Phillips Still In Lead

J. R. Phillips (Auckland) retained the lead in the New Zealand chess championship when he beat the Canterbury player, A. J. Nyman, in the ninth round of the championship vesterday The New Zealand Chess Congress is being held In Christchurch.

Phillips and Z. Frankel (Wellington), who is at present holding second place, will meet in the tenth round today, and this match could well decide who will be the 1958 New Zealand champion. Phillips drew with K. M. Steele in the ninth round, after Steele had offered a draw Steele, playing white, sacrificed a knight for two pawnsearly in the game.
