Phillips Still In Lead
J. R. Phillips (Auckland) retained the lead in the New Zealand chess championship when he beat the Canterbury player, A. J. Nyman, in the ninth round of the championship vesterday The New Zealand Chess Congress is being held In Christchurch.
Phillips and Z. Frankel (Wellington), who is at present holding second place, will meet in the tenth round today, and this match could well decide who will be the 1958 New Zealand champion. Phillips drew with K. M. Steele in the ninth round, after Steele had offered a draw Steele, playing white, sacrificed a knight for two pawnsearly in the game. Later Phillips returned the gesture, but for three pawns From then on Phillips was content to hold Steele. Adrianus Lentz, aged 28, clearly won the second-class tournament Lentz came to New Zealand five years ago from Holland, and settled in Dunedin Lentz, who won the Otago junior championship tn 1955, hopes to take part in next year’s championship reserve Abbreviations used in the results are:—Auckland (AuCk.), Canterbury (Canty), Hawke’s Bay (H.
