GLIDING CLUB’S CAMP
Young Member’s Success I One of the youngest members of the Canterbury Gliding Club •flying at the club’s annual camp at Simon’s Hill in the Mackenzie i Country made a flight last Monday which qualified him for gain lof height section of the Gold C. lone of the premier gliding awards. ;Mr D. McKillop, aged 18, has been igliding for eight months and has •only recently converted to the Flying Skylark Mar b * II sailplane (Mr McKillop was towed by a Tiger Moth to 1800 feet and gained lift from the hill which took him ito 15.000 feet. If he had had oxygen he would have continued to a greater altitude. He landed near Fairlie, 30 miles from Simon's Pass.
Mr P. Wylie, the club captain, made a flight which qualified him for two sections of the Silver C award. He remained airborne for five hours and a half and recorded a gain of height of 3300 feet. Mr Wylie has only to complete a distance flight of 32 miles to complete the award.
Two members of the club. Messrs D. Murray and W. Meaclen gained their C certificates in the P3l training glider. Mr Meaclen gained the award on his second solo flight and was airborne for 37 minutes.
The former world champion glider pilot, Mr P. Wills, is attending the camp but so far has made only six flights, none of which has taken him away from the site.
