UNIVERSITY ROLLS

Doubled Numbers By 1966-67

The University of Canterbury may have more than doubled its number of students in 10 years if the present trends are continued, according to a booklet called “New Zealand University Enrolment—Projections to 1975.” which has been issued recently by the Department of Education. According to the booklet, school population forecasts have been fevised in the light of the latest information on enrolment trends. The enrolments considered were of internal students, both full and part time, at the four constituent universities and the two agricultural colleges. They do not include extra-mural students, or those taking courses of less than a year at the agricultural colleges. University enrolments, which have remained fairly constant about 10.000 for the last five years, are expected to exceed 15,000 by 1963 and 20,000 by 1966-67. By 1975 they should approach, if not exceed, 30,000 students. The increase will be most rapid between 1964 and 1968, only eight years from now. The increase is expected to continue beyond 1968, but at a diminished rate. Calculation Methods

Possible enrolments for the individual universities were calculated, but with not the same degree of accuracy as for the total enrolment. These predictions could also be easily upset by a number of factors, such as the establishment of a fifth university the opening of special schools at existing universities, or the limitation of enrolment by any institution.

Two figures were calculated; one for the highest number of enrolments, and one for the lowest possible. The true figure is likely to lie between the two given figures. Projections for the individual universities are, with the highest estimate given first:— 1962.—Auckland. 5100 and 4450; Victoria. 3900 and 3400; Canterbury, 3500 and 3000; Otago, 3300 and 2850. 1967.—Auckland, 7950 and 6500; Victoria, 6050 and 4950; Canterbury, 5250 and 4150; Otago, 4950 and 3950.

1972.—Auckland, 9400 and 7500; Victoria, 7250 and 5650; Canterbury, 6050 and 4550; Otago. 5700 and 4350.
