LAWN TENNIS Junior Tourney Begins With Increased Entries

The entry of more than 500 players gave the administrators of the Cromb and Merritt junior tennis tournament, which began in Christchurch yesterday, a difficult task. By last evening the early rounds of nearly all sections had been played and in some of the smaller singles sections the quarter-finals had been completed. With the size of the entry, the 22 hard courts at Wilding Park were not sufficient for the tournament and sections were played at the North Linwood, Avonside Church and Linwood club courts.

For the four-day tournament, which is by far the biggest held in the South Island each year, the participants range from those in the under 13 sections with no previous competitive experience and wielding rackets almost as big as themselves, to some of the province's best juniors in the under 18 sections.

Nearly all the seeded players in the various sections got through their matches successfully yesterday, but a few were eliminated and several others had close calls.

Among the ” seeded players eliminated were B. Judge, seeded fourth in the under 18 boys' singles, who was beaten. 9-1, by B. Lane. Judge is; ranked higher than Lane on the junior ladder, but he was sadly off form and Lane gave him no chance. The only top seed put out was S. Jenkins, of the Linwood Avenue Club, in the under 13 girls’ singles. She was beaten in the quarter-finals by an unseeded player, C. Andrew, of Sumner. Andrew showed that she had great power in her shots for one so young and she won without the loss of a game. Results: — BOVS’ EVENTS Under 18 Slneles First Round.—L. Walpole beat B. Ogier, 9-3: T.
