MISSION TO CHILDREN
Groups At Waikuku And Leithfield
The familiar altar of sand, decorated with white shells, will be again seen at Waikuku Beach this Christmas. The Children’s Special Service Mission, a band of young Christian workers drawn from many denominations, is preparing its campaign for the holidays. The mission this year will be conducted by a party of 18 young men and women, whose ages range from 18 to 30, who will share in the services and addresses and camp life. The party is under the care of the house parents,, the vicar of Glenmark and his wife, the Rev. W. C. Wisdom, and Mrs Wisdom. The leader of the mission will be Mr Peter McSkimming. The mission was designed to interest children in spiritual matters and practical Christianity, Mr McSkimming said. The services would be informal and would begin with a chorus, some memory verses from the Bible and then a short talk. These services were usually held in the mornings and in the afternoon, organised games were arranged. On Sunday evenings, the mission would conduct services and one of Dr. Billy Graham’s films, Oiltown, U.S.A., will be shown on Sunday evening, January 5, he said.
The mission will begin on Saturday, December 28, and will close on Tuesday, January 7, Mr McSkimming said. This year the mission will celebrate its ninetieth anniversary of conducting missions for children.
A smaller house party conducted by the mission will be in camp at Leithfield Beach under the leadership of the Rev. Graham Lamont. Twelve similar missions will be held at beaches throughout New Zealand this summer.
