More than 18,000 persons disappeared from their homes in France in 1956, according to the Ministry of the Interior. Each Tuesday and Friday the French National Radio network broadcasts the names of missing persons. The Ministry said that nearly 12,000 of the persons missing last year had been found. The Ministry divides the missing persons into several classes.
Husbands and wives who have run off with new partners. Children and adolescents. The adolescents gravitate mainly to the Riviera and Paris. Frequently parents receive telephone calls from girls to say they are safe and are living in the artists’ quarters of Montmartre and Montparnasse but that they do not want to come home. The tendency, the Ministry says, is for girls to run off in spring and boys in autumn. Persons suffering from loss of memory. Civil servants, bank and insurance employees who have made off i with their employer’s money. Potential suicides. Persons lost in mountaineering or swimming accidents. Persons who have been murdered.
