DISQUALIFIED FOR YEAR

Sir Goodwin’s Owner

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dee. 17.

The executive committee of the New Zealand Racing Conference today disqualified a Tauranga owner. J. Rumble, for one year. The disqualification becomes effective immediately. A further direction was that the horse Sir Goodwin be deemed disqualified for races he contested between December 29, 1956, and October 5. 1957. During that period Sir Goodwin won approximately £2300 in stakes. The charges against Rumble were preferred by a racecourse inspector, Mr C. Dudley, under Rule 103 (6) relating, to the eligibility of Sir Goodwin to be raced while it was owned in partnership with L Tangitu, of Tauranga. Rumble pleaded guilty to charges that the horse was ineligible to be entered for or started in 14 races in which it had been placed during the period referred to in the charges. Rumble, at the time, had been prohibited from entering a racecourse.

No charges were preferred against Tangitu. It was explained by counsel for Mr Dudley that Tangitu had no knowledge that the regulations applied to Rumble, and Tangitu. in any event, might incur substantial loss by the reason of the automatic disqualification of the horse in each of the races'concerned. In October, Rumble transferred his interest in the horse to Tangitu, who had been registered as the sole owner from October 30. 1957. RUmble stated that while he was aware the regulations applied to bookmakers and' to persons convicted under the Gaming Act, he did not know they applied in other respects and for some years assumed he was entitled to attend any race meeting.
