APPLE AND PEAR EXPORTS
Nelson Crops Reduced By Hail Damage (From Our Own Reporter) NELSON, December 17. Exports of apples and pears during the coming season will be reduced by about 124,000 cases because of hail damage. Delayed effects of a recent sudden hailstorm are particularly evident in the orchards of 32 apple growers in the Redwood Valley and Mapua areas; some of the crops will not be saleable at all. Estimates of Nelson’s apple exports for the coming season are 1,213,000 cases, compared with 1,289,000 last year; and 120,000 cases of pears, compared with 126,000 last season. The first Nelson apples will be on the New Zealand market early in the New Year. Late in January there will be a token export of Gravensteins to Britain.
