HOTEL BUILDING AUCTIONED
Reserve Price Not Reached
One of the oldest buildings in Christchurch, the Grand Hotel, was passed in at an auction in Christchurch yesterday when it was offered for sale on account of Bailing Breweries New Zealand, Ltd-
The Grand Hotel is on a section of a little more than 12 perches of land at 135 Cashel street. It is more than 60 years old and at one time was known as the “Cafe de Paris.” The three-storey building has a floor space of about 8000 square feet. Many years ago the hotel only provided facilities for 20 guests. During later years the number increased. There were several bids from the 20 persons who attended the auction but none came anywhere near the reserve price. The reserve was based on a recent Government valuatipn. The hotel’s licence is expected to exnire in about 18 months. After this the building will have to be used for commercial purposes. Tbe licence will be transferred to a new hotel which is expected to be built at Marshland within the next two years.
