FINAL ELECTION RETURNS

Strength Of Parties Unchanged (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 10. With the Clutha seat yet to be decided, the Labour Party has 41 seats and the National Party 38 in the new Parliament, according to final returns for the General Election declared tonight. Although final returns for 11 of the 79 electorates were not to hand, election-night results were confirmed in all seats regarded as marginal before the counting of envelope votes. In several seats which National candidates held by narrow margins majorities were increased. The Minister of Defence (Mr D. J. Eyre) retained his North Shore seat by 462 votes, compared with 266 on election night. Mr F. L. A. Gotz, whose electionnight majority was 94, still has the smallest margin, 159. Mr D. J. Carter has a 161-vote majority in Raglan, 32 votes fewer than on November 30. Mr D. Rae, who had an eight-vote majority in the previous Parliament and a lead of 145 on election night, now has a margin of 498.

The largest number of votes for a single candidate was that for Mr R. Macdonald (Labour), who in Ponsonby polled 11,029 to gain the biggest personal majority of 6592. This is one of the largest votes in New Zealand electoral history. Miss M. B. Howard (Labour), with 10.213, had a majority of 6450 in Sydenham. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash) polled 8975 votes to establish a 4430-vote majority in Hutt, and the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) held his Pahiatua seat by a majority of 4020 votes, with a total of 8075.
