URBAN FIRE DISTRICT

Lyttelton Case Discussed The Lyttelton Borough Council’s refusal to join the proposed Christchurch urban fire district was raised at a meeting of the Christchurch Fire Board last evening. The chairman (Mr W. R. Campbell) said it was not for the board to take the first move to have anyone join the district. While there would be no directive, it should be understood that Lyttelton could not be assured of instant assistance. Dispersal of the board’s appliances was a matter for the Chief Fire Officer, but responsibility must be primarily with the contiguous areas. Mr N. R. Forbes said it was ridiculous that Lyttelton should remain outside the area. He was quite sure that if there was a big fire at the port there would be an immediate call for help. The board agreed to advise the borough council that if the council wished, the board would be willing to send two representatives to the council to discuss the proposed new district.
