Large Number hi Farming in 1956 there were 21,904 teach' ers in New Zealand (including university staff) of whom 11,507 were women, according to a report on the census findings issued by the Department of Statistics. The largest occupational group for male was farmers, farm managers and overseers with 73,486 and second was the group including toolmakers, machinists, plumbers. welders and platers which claimed 53,532. The number of women employed as office clerks was 26,242 and 24,737 Were shop assistants. t The number of actors, musicians and related workers, male and female, was 1742 and professional athletes and sportsmen and sportswomen numbered 1246. Creative artists and designers numbered 1837 and authors, journalists and related workers 1341.
