CALEDONIAN SOCIETY
75th Anniversary Celebrations The Canterbury Caledonian Society began the celebration of the 75th anniversary of Its foundation on Sunday when a churcn parade was held at St. Andrew’s Church. Nine bands and the two girls’ marching teams affiliated to the society assembled at the Caledonian Hall and marched to the church. The preacher was the Rev. R. M. Rodgers. The president of the society (Mr Charles S. Thomas) read the first lesson and Lieutenant Fox read the second lesson.
More than 200 children attended the fancy dress party held by the society in the Caledonian Hail on Monday evening. The children were entertained by a puppet show, games, a magician and community singing. The costumes were judged by Miss Edna Neville and music was provided by Dale’s dance band. Prizes were awarded as follows:
Best fancy dress: girl. Robin Hamberger (Matador), boy, Gary Stewart (evening cloths); most original fancy dress: girl, Glenls McGerity (sack), boy, Stuart Carruthers (shower).
Special prizes: Jessica McEntee (fairy), Jennifer Griffiths (Bo Peep), Carolyn Watson (Rainbow), Linda Rutledge (Bo Peep).
lan Rowlands (Koko Kola), Julie Walters (Crinoline). 5 years and under: girls, Isabella Key (Poodle); boys, Christopher Goldsmith (Traffic Cop).
A concert will be presented by the older members of the society in the Caledonian Hall this evening and the celebrations will conclude with a Highland Ball tomorrow evening.
