CURRENT NOTES

Captain G. R. Dawe, of Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps, arrived in Christchurch yesterday from Malaya. She will go to Burnham Military Camp Hospital to replace Sister F. E. Hallins, of Christchurch, who has gone to the British Military Hospital at Kamuntung, Taiping. Malaya.

About 450 members attended a Christmas party held by the Canterbury Travel Club at the Winter Garden yesterday afternoon. They were received by the president (Sir Joseph Ward) and Lady Ward. Guests of honour were the president of the South Canterbury Travel Club (Mrs B. L Blodorn) and the vice-president (Mrs R. J. White). Some 60 gifts were distributed from a Christmas tree to holders of lucky numbers. Carol singing was led by Mrs Cara Cogswell and Mr Vernon Reid. The entertainment programme was as follows:—Mrs Masie McNair. Misses Marjorie Chapman and Romela Griffiths (instrumental trio); Mrs Cara Cogswell (vocal solos), accompanied by Mrs W. E. Olds; Messrs Dennis Manhire and Vernon Reid (vocal duets) accompanied by Mr Arthur Bell.

The St. James (Harewood) Young Wives Group were hostesses to about 150 members of sister groups at the Mothers' Union throughout the parish of Papanui at a Christmas party held at the Harewood Hall. The Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. Martin Sullivan) gave a talk on marriage. The Dean and Mrs Sullivan and other guests were welcomed by • the group leader, Mrs Neil Isaac.

Members of the Shirley Methodist Women's Guild held their final meeting of the year in the Rowe Memorial Hall, when they entertained friends at an afternoon social. Songs and duets were given by Mesdames Swallow and Williams and humorous recitations by Mrs Alan Pashby. Mrs H. Kerr was accompanist. The president (Mrs M. Tunnicliffe) welcomed the visitors. Christmas carols were sung before the close of the meeting.

Members of the Riccarton League of Mothers held their break-up party recently when Mrs H. May presided. The Upper Riccarton Townswomen’s Guild entertained with two sketches. The league choir and Mesdames Swallow, Hanafin. Sinclair, Pashby, and Scott gave items. Mrs Scott was the accompanist.

Mr Betteridge gave a talk on compost at the November meeting of the Belfast Garden Club. Mrs Huntington presided.
