PRIZE FOR BEST CADET

St. Andrew’s College The best cadet in the Southern Military District for 1957 is Neil Dougins Thomson, regimental ser-geant-major nt St. Andrew's College, Christchurch. He has won the William Robert Friar Memorial Prize awarded by the Imperial Cadet Association of Great Britain. Confirmation of his nomination has been received at Southern Military District headquarters from the Chief of the General Staff (Major-General C. E. Weir). Neil Thomson, who is aged 18. is head prefect at St. Andrew's College and in the school cadet unit has previously won awards for being the best junior noncommissioned officer and the best

sergeant. He has won the school's senior .22 Title shooting championship and has represented the school in both .22 and .303 shooting competitions. An' outstanding pupil, Neil Thomson has taken first place in his class each year at the college. He has won the senior impromptu speaking contest for three years in succession and has taken leading roles in three dramatic works produced by the college. Shooting Trophies St. Andrew's College has also won the Southern District Victory Challenge Shield shooting trophy. Area 10 headquarters announced last evening. The A learn topped the competition with 2334 points out of a 254 possible. The team comprised: E. G. Abbott. P. H. Willis, G. B. Todd. P. C. Inwood, C. R. Morrison, I. B. Satterthwaite. A. M.' Brown. W. J. Thompson. J. C. Birks, W. S. Gartery. In this contest a team from Christchurch Boys’ High School was second. Teams from Christ's College and St. Andrew’s College were placed third equal. Information has also been received that Christchurch Boys' High School has gained the highest score of 303 points in the Dominion section of the Earl Roberts Imperial Cadet Trophy. 1957. The team will represent New Zealand in the Empire Trophy contest.
