BOOKMAKERS ROBBED

Big Sydney Club Theft (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) SYDNEY. Dec. 2. Detectives are investigating a sensational robbery from Tattersail’s Club, the bookmakers’ headquarters in Sydney. The police estimate that the amount taken is more than £30,000. Other estimates of the amount taken range as high as £lOO,OOO. Reports of the robbery caused a sensation among bookmakers and racing men at Warwick Farm on Saturday. Both club officials and detectives are reluctant to discuss the case. It is known that the robbery was discovered on Friday night, and that the money was taken from a number of safety deposit boxes in the club’s strongroom. Club members say the safe deposit system was widely used by members. Many kept huge amounts in their boxes for use on settling days. Police say that the boxes were not forced, but appealed to have been opened with a duplicate key and then closed again. The full amount taken may not be known until settling time today.
