Dr. Fuchs’ Ordeal Over Crevasse

(Rec. 1.15 a.m.) LONDON, December 2. The leader of the Commonwealth Antarctic Expedition, Dr. V. Fuchs, broke through the ice in a snocat and hung suspended for five hours on the lip of a 60ft crevasse, it was reported in London today. In a message to the expedition’s London headquarters Dr. Fuchs said that he and a surveyor, David Stratton, broke through the ice in the leading snocat. His message said: “Cat called Rock ’n’ Roll, which it does, hung suspended with its track pontoons at grotesque angles against the crevasse sides.” Two snocats linked with two weasels held Dr. Fuchs* snocat from dropping, and another vehicle pulled the track pontoons into place against the crevasse walls, and Dr. Fuchs’ vehicle was heaved back to safety.
