NEW BUILDING AT LINCOLN

Unit For Animal Research

An animal research unit is being established on the farm at Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln. TH 1 ?* Government has made a grant of £8590 towards the cost of providing research facilities, including a building, drafting yards, scales, fencing, water supply, and equipment for the building. Tenders are now being called for the building, which will be of concrete block construction and will have 3300 square feet of main floor spgee. It will include a section for the handling and treatment of sheep, and underneath there will be a section for holding up to 25 sheep in pens. The facilities of the building will also include a feed stall, a general purpose field laboratory, and a record room. The yards have already been erected, and fencing is under way in preparation for the building. In the past, research projects in animal science undertaken by members of the staff and honours students have been handicapped by inadequate facilities. The new research unit should overcome this position. Tenders are also being called for conversion of an old building formerly occupied by the veterinary department into a soil science laboratory. In the soil science department also there has not been sufficient room for teaching and research programmes, and it is proposed to shift some of the department to* the converted building. The building, when modified, will contain two small offices and three laboratories to accommodate two staff members, a technician and honours students. Tenders are also being called for a small building for veterinary purposes. It will also be in concrete block. Architects for both of the new buildings and the conversion of the old building are Messrs Holliss and Leonard.
