MR WATERS’ CAREER

Mr Waters was regarded as one of the most promising young men in the Labour movement and a successful political career had been forecast for him. He was a son of Mr B. F. Waters, a former chairman of the Social Security Commission and secretary for War Pensions.

A dairy farmer at Inchclutha for the last four years, Mr Waters was 28 years of age, and was married with a young family. He was well known for his interests in Young Farmers’ Club affairs, and in Rugby football. He was a past president of the Kaitangata Y.F.C., and a member of the district committee.

He was a prominent Rugby ref eree and was vice-president of the South Otago Rugby Referees Association. As a player, he first gained prominence when he was selected in the Manawatu colts team in 1950, and in the same season was a reserve for the Manawatu senior team. He had also represented Ngatapo, Hurunui, and South Otago Sub-unions and the Otago Sub-union team. Mr Waters attended Wellesley and Rongotai Colleges and Hutt Valley High School. He was vice-president of both the Balclutha branch of the Labour Party and the Clutha Labour Representation Committee, and was an official delegate at the annual conference in Wellington this year.
