Big Increase In Spending (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CANBERRA, November 29. The Australian Federal Government would increase its spending on the State universities from £6,000,000 in the last three years to £22,000.000 in the next three years, the Prime Minister (Mr Menzies) announced in the House of Representatives last night. He said that the Government had accepted in principle most of the recommendations of the Murray Committee on the Australian universities tabled in Parliament on Tuesday. The Government accepted in principle the setting up of a permanent Australian Universities Committee, he said. Sir Keith Murray, chairman of Britain’s Universities Grants Commission, spent three months at the head of the committee investigating the Australian universities. The committee reported that the universities were in a critical condition and that drastic remedies were necessary to prevent a catastrophic situation.
