GREATER SHARE OF INCOME
Mr Gillespie At Kaiapoi
“It is not the cost of living, but the standard of living which has risen through the efforts of the National Government,” said Mr W. H. Gillespie, National candidate for the electorate of Huninui, at an election meeting at Kaiapoi last evening. About W persons attended the meeting which was well-ordered and quiet.
“If you were limited to buying only those things which were available in 1949, today you would not know what to do with your money,” he said. “Salary and wage earners have never had such a good government because they have never had such a large share of the national income,” he said. What was left after taxation hid been deducted was the sum that mattered. Mr Gillespie said. National had followed its policy of reducing taxation and its promise of 25 per cent, rebate of income tax was not only for one year,, but was to be continued. "Have nothing to do with those who want to tinker with the money system.” he said. "The imaginary gap between New Zealand’s produce and money values, if closed, will only bring higher buving pressure and dearer prices. Fxtra productivity cannot be replaced by funny money.” Import controls would be brought back if Labour regained the Treasury benches, he said. Bulk buying, would be resumed which, with its so-called stabilisation. had denied the people of New Zealand the fruits of their labours. The British Government would not have anything to do with bulk buying. “The greatest benefit conferred on New Zealand by the National Government has been industrial peace. No longer Is the country held to ransom by the wreckers. “No country can afford to wait until every serviceman is settled before giving assistance to civilians. Therefore, nearly half of future settlement schemes will be for young, experienced men to be assisted on to the land. In our farming is the prosperity of the country and the farmers art the backbone of the country," ha said.
