SIR SIDNEY HOLLAND
' Labour Reference Denlored A (New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NTH.. Nov. 28. Most persons sincerely regretted the illness which forced the retirement of Sir Sidney Holland, but Mr A. H. Nordmeyer, in his speech from Palmerston North last night, had seen fit to criticise that retirement, said the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake), when he spoke in Palmerston North this evening. “Mr Nordmeyer knows better than any other man in the country the reason why Sir Sidney Holland retired,” Mr Holyoake said. “He knows that Sir Sidney Holland had worn himself out. just as many other men have done who have worked as hard. He fell victim to continual strain and continual overwork and devotion to his country. “In Parliament there is a code of ethics, and I thought every member observed the code,” said Mr Holyoake. “It is: ‘We will hit hard. But we will never hit a sick man, and we will never hit a man when he is down’.” Mr Holyoake said that Mr Nordmeyer’s innuendo was beyond contempt.
