CONSTITUTION OF CEYLON
Revision For Republic (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) COLOMBO, Nov. 27. The Ceylon House of Representatives has decided, by 41 votes to 2, to appoint a select committee of Parliamentarians to consider the revision of the Constitution and the establishment of a republic. The motion, moved oy the Prime Minister, Mr Solomon Bandaranaike, was supported by members of the Opposition, including the Federal Party and the Lanka Sama Samaja Party. Ceylon was first made a Crown Colony in 1802. Passing through various stages of increasing selfgovernment. it became a full member of the British Commonwealth when the Ceylon Independence Act, 1947, came into force on February 4, 1948. The American Associated Press reported from Madras that a Government spokesman had disclosed today that more than 2000 persons had* been arrested in the State for burning or trying to burn copies of India’s Constitution. They are members of Dravida Kazhasam. an association of original inhabitants of the State. They want to outlaw Hindu caste distinctions and have demanded changes in the Constitution.
