LIFE SAVING
Plans For National Day Arrangements for the national life-saving day, Sunday, December 1, were discussed at a meeting of the Canterbury Surf Association recently. The six surf clubs will hold demonstrations covering all aspects of surf lifesaving with emphasis on instruction in Holger Neilsen resuscitation. To attract the attention of the public on the life-saving day, public address systems will be used and all demonstrations and instruction will probably take place in the afternoon. Permission for the use of Aus-tralian-style hollow boards for surf-ski events was requested by the South Brighton club. Approval was given but members thought that competitors using the craft would be out of their class. The club was commended on its efforts to use new equipment in its activities. A trophy, to be known as the Te Onopoto Shield, has been I anonymously given for competi-
tion by women’s four-man alarm teams in Canterbury. The association gratefully accepted the trophy.
The president (Mr S. B. Mason) reported that a fully-equipped reel, line and belt had been sent to the Kaikoura Swimming Club on loan. The club is attempting to establish a surf club in the district, and assistance from the association will be given. A letter of appreciation acknowledging the efforts of the association was received from the clyb. The Canterbury surf clubs will be asked for names of competitors available for selection for the Wellington-Canterbury inter-pro-vincial contest next March. The association was grateful that the Wellington body had agreed to Canterbury’s suggestions for the event.
