HOSPITAL NEWS IN BRIEF

Increased Staff Of Bacteriologists

Because of increased work, and in preparation for the operation of the Cashmere Hospital, the North Canterbury Hospital Board yesterday decided to increase the establishment of trained bacteriologists from 10 to 12. Three additional trainees will be engaged in 1958 and also in 1959. Maternity Unit— Although the scheme for a maternity unit at Cashmere Hospital has been approved in principle, the Health Department considers that the initial estimate was too high and has suggested provisions to reduce the figure. The building committee reported that a detailed estimate was being prepared by the architect.

Kitchen Equipment The board’s desire to instal kitchen equipment at the Cashmere Hospital of overseas manufacture rather than of New Zealand manufacture has been confirmed. It was now extremely doubtful whether sufficient equipment could be made locally for supply before Cashmere Hospital was opened and, further, a number of units required were not at present made in New Zealand.

Purchase of House— The purchase of a house property at £3438 at 301 Burwood road has received Ministerial approval. Other approvals were of £1773 for the access road to the Huntsbury Home and a grant of £5OO to the St. John Ambulance for the purchase of a new vehicle. Occupational Therapy A scheme to provide occupational therapy for selected home-bound patients had much to commend it, the hospital committee reported. The chief occupational therapist had been asked to prepare a positive proposal. X-ray Staff— Dr. B. Fazakcerley was appointed to act as assistant radiologist in 1958. It was decided to take no action on a suggestion that the board’s charge for chest X-ray examinations be reiduced to that of private radiologist*.
