“Rules” May Be Called “Footy”

(HZ. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, November 27. Officials of the Australian National Football Council hope the Australian Rules code will become known simply as “footy.” The president, Mr R. P. Rodriguez, said today he had been searching for years for a short, distinctive name which would give the game ranking with other major sports. The secretary, Mr Bruce Andrew, said newspaper headlines often referred to the game as “footy” and everyone knew exactly what was being discussed. “I don’t know whether ’footy’ is the best name we can get, but it is certainly better than ’rules’,!’ he said. Mr A. G. Gillon said that “footy” was not sufficiently dignified for such a great game. On his suggestion it was decided to refer the question of a name to all major state football organisations.
