SYDNEY WHARF DISPUTE

Melbourne Union’s Support

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, November 27

Melbourne watersiders have pledged full support to a call by the Sydney branch of the Waterside Workers’ Federation for a national 24-hour stoppage. The decision was reached after the Melbourne branch executive had discussed the Sydney wharf dispute for nearly three hours. The executive said it would support the stoppage to draw attention to the “vicious attacks on our members and the one-sided justice meted out under the existing provisions of the Stevedoring Industry Act.” Meeting in Sydney

A Sydney report says that the dispute, which has disrupted the Sydney waterfront for a month, may be settled today. The main parties in the dispute—the Waterside Workers’ Federation, and the Foremen’s Stevedores’ Association—yesterday drew up terms of settlement at a threehour conference, and these will be submitted to stop-work meetings of watersiders today.
