Bookmaker Sent To Gaol For Month
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 27.
“This Court is getting a wee bit sick and tired of spielers like you hanging round pubs,” Mr F. McCarthy, S.M., told William Leonard McLaren, aged 53, a workman, in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court today in sending him to gaol for a month on a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker.
McLaren, admitting the offence, told ihe Magistrate that he was bookmaking “to get a few shillings for Christmas.” The police prosecutor (Mr J. W. Overton) said McLaren had frankly admitted he was bookmaking when seen in an Auckland hotel by a member of the police special duties branch. Papers found on McLaren showed he ’ had taken £ 133 in bets on the day he was interviewed.
