CANTERBURY SEA CADETS
Annual Prize Giving Everything you have done you have done well.” said the commanding officer of H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus (Captain J. N. Allan) speaking to the Canterbury division of Sea Cadets at the annual prize-giving. Captain Allan was acting for Commodore P. Phipps, who was unable to attend because high winds at Wellington caused the cancellation of airline flights. “What I like most about your work is that it is volunteer work,” he said. ‘‘l hope that as many of you that can make it will join the R.N.Z.N.V.R. Some had already volunteered to do military training with the Canterbury R.N.Z.N.V.R. division and he hoped they brought with them the spirit they had shown in the Sea Cadets.” Captain Allan presented a long service and good conduct medal Ito the instructor petty officer for 1 the Sea Cadets, Petty Officer W. iT. Evans, of the R.N.Z.N. A number of men and women from the Navy League attended the prize-giving. Prizes were presented to the cadets by the president of the junior branch of the Navy League (Miss Ann McElwee). Prize List Prizes presented were:— Nelson Column and book presented by the Junior Navy League, J. Rammage; Steadfast Trophy and book presented by the Steadfast unit Kingston-on-Thames, London, I. Hunter; Bert Guard Cup presented by the Women’s Auxiliary of the Navy League, Port Watch; Whaler Race Cup presented by Mr J. Peddie, Port Watch; swimming cup presented by .Miss N. Vale, Starboard Watch; Tug-o-War Cup presented by Commander D. P. Enright, Starboard Watch; shooting cup presented by Mrs Norton Francis, Starboard Watch; best shot senior medal presented by Lieutenant M. Murnane, F. G. Roberts; best junior shot medal presented by the commanding officer Sea Cadets, J. D. Campbell; marksman’s badges, F. G. Roberts, R. Craig, W. E. Philipson, J. D. Campbell, M. D. White; signals cup presented by Mrs MowbrayTripp and book presented/by Mrs W. Thacker, A. Carr; junior swimming champion medal presented by wardroom officers, J. N. Boyce; best first-year cadet cup presented by Mr S. Flewwelyn and associates and book presented by president of middle watch of Navy League, M. S. Swallow; senior swimming champion medal presented by wardroom officers, R. Craig; attendance cup presented by Ex-Royal Navalmen’s Association, K. R. Austin; best dressed cadet book presented by commanding officer Sea Cadets, B. J. Dunn. A court in Malmo, Sweden, ruled that a housemaid may rightly claim four bottles of beer ia day from her employer as part of her food allowance.
