N.Z. BATTALION FOR MALAYA
Main Body Embarks At Wellington (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 27. The main body of the Ist Battalion, New Zealand Regiment, which will sail from Wellington aboard the Captain Cook for Malaya, arrived on the wharf by special troop train from Waiouru this afternoon. The train, with a large replica of the regimental badge on the front of the diesel locomotive, was met at the wharf by a large crowd, which braved the rain and the strong north-west wind, and amid loud cheering from relatives the men filed on to the wharf, and boarded the ship. This afternoon the unit’s commanding officer (LieutenantColonel W. R. K. Morrison) received a telegram from the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake). Mr Holyoake wished the battalion “a pleasant journey, an interesting and useful period of service, and a safe return to your families at the completion of your term of duty in Malaya.”
