MEDICAL STAFF AT CASHMERE
Board, Department Disagree
Disagreement has arisen between the Health Department and the North Canterbury Hospi’al Board over medical staffing at the new Cashmere Hospital. The department does not agree with the board’s proposal to defer staff establishment until the Christchurch Hospital rebuilding programme is completed, maintaining that it would be difficult for Cashmere to function as effectively as it could unless some stabilitv in staffing was attained as early as possible. The combined medical staff had confirmed its previous opinions, reported the Cashmere Hnspi’al commissioning committee to v«sterday’s meeting of the board r t held that to maintain the essential balance between chronic and acute work, it was essenti”! to preserve fluidity in staff deployment.
The board adopted a recommendation that visiting staff appointments should be made for two years and that the direction nf such staff to particular hospitals be arranged by the board, the service at those hospitals to be not less than one year. The board’s views will be discussed with departmental officers when they visit Christchurch in. February.
