There were brilliant flashes of lightning throughout the day and intermittent claps of thunder. Lake Whakatipu has risen a foot, and may rise higher. The storm caused power breaks •nd delayed shipping. In Invercargill itself l ’ s in of rain fell from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Gutters overflowed and great pools of V; ater covered the streeets. Highvoltage electrical equipment failed, and the city was without power for about two hours tonight.
