PRODUCTION OF BUTTERFAT
Slight Decrease Last Season
Judged on the country’s production as a whole, the 1956-57 dairy season was a good one, although butter-fat production decreased slightly, says the Government statistician (Mr G. E. Wood) in the October Abstract of Statistics. Butter-fat production for the season is estimated at 525 million lb.
Approximately 459 million lb of butterfat was used by dairy factories for cheese, butter, preserved milk, casein, and other products, and 46 million lb was used for drinking, cooking, or making ice cream. After manufacture. 71.3 per cent, of the total butterfat produced was exported as butter, cheese, or preserved milk, mainly to the United Kingdom, which took 142.700 tons of butter and 82.300 tons of cheese. More than 5000 tons of butter was bought by the United States, the next biggest customer.
