’ Queen Salote of Tonga, who is now in residence in Auckland, will be invited to visit Dunedin for some of the city's Festival Week celebrations next year* The Mayor of Dunedin (Sir Leonard Wright) has announced that Queen Salote will be invited to open the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s summer show on the day after the festival procession. The Young Contingent of the Victoria League held a dinnerdance last evening at Elizabeth House. Among the guests and members were a number of people from the country. The function was held by candlelight. Bowls of red roses decorated the supper tables and rooms Hostesses were Misses J. Macfarlane, J. Boyle, V. Grigg, A. Nicholl. and Messrs D. Fahey. J. Laing and P. Blaxall. The November meeting of the Riccarton Townswomen’s Guild took the form of a Christmas party. Husbands were invited and among the special guests were Mrs Plumridge and Mrs Collett, the Dominion president and secretary respectively. Mrs Fowler representing the area federation and members of sister guilds. A large attendance enjoyed the programme of songs, sketches and carols provided by the choir under the leadership of Mis Heinz. Mrs Middleton entertained with humourous items, and the guilds’ | pianist. Mrs Anderson began the I programme with a pianoforte solo, iThe Christmas cake, made and ’iced bv Mrs Hogg, was cut by Mrs I Plumridge. The evening ended with the singing of “Auld Lang ■ Syne." I A well attended meeting of the Young Wives’ Group of St. (John’s Church was held recently, i when Mrs J. L. Hunter gave a talk on cuts of meat. Mrs Hack (moved a vote of thanks and preI sen ted Mrs Hunter with a bouqet iof roses. Mrs D. Ellis presided. | Canon H. M. Cocks welcomed (nine additional members to a ' meeting of the second evening 'Mothers' Union, held in St. Pauls I Parish Hall recently. Mrs C Campbell presided over an attendance of 25 members and introduced Miss Rose Reynolds, the guest speaker. The St. Ninian's Church Youth Group recently entertained patients of Sunnyside Mental Hospital with a programme of concert items, country dancing and community singing. Mrs Chatfield held her final monthly dance of the year at the hospital [recently, Mr T. Regan's Wanderers.presented a variety revue programme and nurses of the Christchurch Public Hospital entertained patients with a concert.
