THOUSANDS ATTEND KENNEL CLUB SHOW

More than 10.000 persons visited the Canterbury Kennel Club's fifty-second annual show during its two days. Club officials said yesterday that the show had been supported even more strongly than in other years. The judging in the outside ring was extremely popular with visitors, and the, stands and seating had been packed for the major events. The Puppy Stakes was the most interesting event to watch, said the president of the club, Mr C. E. Hale. All aspects of the show had been strongly contested and the standard of entries was fully up to that of other years. An Italian sheepdog on exhibition attracted much attention and many inquiries were received about it. The animal shown resembled a large white Golden Retriever. The owner of the champion dog in the show, best in show—all breeds, and winner of the W. C. Leversedge Memorial Cup was Mr W. J. Heslop. Besides being proud of his successes with his three-year-old Ch. Tiny Tim of Andana (imp), he was especially jubilant at winning the Leversedge Cup. This was given to the Canterbury Kennel Club in memory of his vncle and it has been a personal ambition of Mr Heslop for many years to win this trophy. Judge’s Comments “The general standard of quality was very good for the large number of dogs exhibited.” said the judge (Mr E. E. Milward, of Australia) yesterday after the judging for the second and final day had ended. “I am of the opinion that with so many sweepstakes and duplicated classes, with both dogs and exhibitors tiring, shows may only arouse confusion. “The judge can only decide on what he sees at one time, and later in the day dogs may tire and flatten. The judge, however, must still judge a particular animal at the time of entry, otherwise judging would be on the basis of performance and not class,” he said. On the whole, cocker spaniels presented one of the finest entries in the show, he said, but some were not displayed as well a§ the breed should be. Springer spaniels, however, were excellent and the winning dog could have faced competition anywhere. The clumber spaniel entries were a breed seldom seen at shows and the animals shown were fine specimens and truly typical of their breed. Irish setters were solid and sound and were handled well. Their owners were to be complimented on their presentation. The Dachshund classes were very pleasing to the judge and he considered them to be very strong, especially in the open classes. A golden retriever exhibited was very pleasing and could have faced strong competition. The pointers were very fine specimens of their breed, but were not presented in bloom—a most important feature in the showing of a smooth-coated show dog. Owners of these dogs were to be complimented on the breeding of their exhibits, the judge said. Awards were made as follows: NON-SPORTING DOGS Bull Terriers—Dogs.—Puppy under 12 months: J. N.
