TRAVEL IN NORTH AFRICA.—This impressive picture of the Great Mosque at Kairouan is from Richard Carrington’s new book, “East From Tunis,” published by Chatto and Windus. His book proves that on his travels Mr Carrington was a keen and intelligent observer, also that he is an accomplished and agreeable story-teller. The Great Mosque is the chief of 23 mosques in Kairouan, which was founded at the time of the Moslem conquest of North Africa. From the beginning it was the centre for the Islamization of North Africa. Today it is still the centre of an annual pilgrimage, seven pilgrimages to Kairouan being regarded as equivalent to one to Mecca.
