BLIZZARD AT McMURDO

Aircraft Turn Back

An American plane bound for the Antarctic put back to Wigram yesterday morning with engine trouble. The plane was a Navy Dakota piloted by LieutenantCommander Conrad Shinn.

At 10 o’clock, about an hour after taking off, oil began leaking from the port engine of the plane. The aircraft turned about and landed at Wigram at 11.45 a.m.

Two other American planes on their way to the Antactic with the Dakota turned back later in the day because of impossible landing conditions at blizardswept McMurdo sound. They were a Navy Neptune and an Air Force Globemaster.

A Globemaster that took off from McMurdo Sound for Christchurch before the blizzard started arrived at Harewood early last evening.

Another Globcmastcr is due al Harewood from the United States with general cargo this morning.
