A « My own experience with applying nitrates in their many forms is that it is better to apply after the crop is up. Time does not always allow you to go back over die area twice, so sometimes it is preferable to apply it at the time of sowing. However, nitrogenous fertilisers are expensive. When the crop is up, you know how good the strike is, so generally, application after the crop is up is preferred. Bulrushes Q- Bulrushes take a lot of hard work and time by digging them out and digging drains but they seem to like my property. Isn't it time that something was done to help people in my position? A - The best comment I have heard about bulrushes was in Central Otago when my informant told me “they are grand shelter at lambing time”. Anyway, there is plenty of help available advice from the Dept, of Agriculture drainage officer who can be very helpful. Good drainage followed by a cleaning crop, then the establishing of a good pasture adequately topdressed. Follow this by good grazing management. With these tactics and help, you'll soon have at least four ewes to the acre where the bulrushes were. Dairy Detergents ®- Teepol is a widely known detergent. Does it conform to the Ruakura ‘B* Type Specification for the cleansing of milking machines? A - No. This specification calls for a blend of alkalis and synthetic detergents such as Teepol. The Shell detergent ‘Delak No. 2' containing Teepol and a balanced blend of alkalis fully meets the requirements of the Ruakura 4 B ’ Type Specification. Its use reduces the build up of 'Milkstone' and leads to a higher level of cleanliness. Keeping Flies out of Fowlhouses, Pig-pens Could you recommend any cheap way that would really work to keep flies out of fowl houses and pig-pens? A - No simple or cheap way is known apart from keeping the fowlhouses and pig-pens and their immediate surroundings absolutely clean. Keep all food supplies, such as skim milk containers, covered. See that drainage is satisfactory. Spray any nearby refuse with an insecticide containing dieldrin.
