RESEARCH ON HYDATIDS
Mr R. G. Gerard’s Reference
The Government was fully aware of the serious increase in the incidence of hydatids in livestock in the Ashburton county and throughout New Zealand, and with the co-operation of boards had made a total of £140.000 available in the last few| months for research into the disease, said the National Parti’ candidate for Ashburton (Mr R. G. Gerard) in an election address at Winchmore.
A highly qualified Australian specialist had been appointed to lead a team of qualified New Zealand research scientists, who would work in conjunction with the New Zealand Medical Research Council in an effort to combat the problem. It was hoped to achieve substantial results by this new approach to the problem, he said. Mr Gerard said he would interview the Minister of Works (Mr W. S. Goosman) to ensure that the £l3OO required by the South Canterbury Catchment Board for protection works in the north branch of the Ashburton river would be readily available from the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council.
