Mr Algie Believes In Tables

The Minister of Education (Mr R. M. Algie) is a firm believer in "old-fashioned tables” for arithmetic. If he asked his own son. who was in standard ITT. *he answer to seven times seven, he did not expect him to have to think. Mr Algie said at the opening of the now Shirley Boys’ High School yesterday. “I think tables have got to be as mechanical as putting one foot in front of the other when you walk,” Mr Algie said. “I don't care whether you sing them, moan them, or say them—as long as you know them.” Most boys found a lot of interest in science today. Mr Algie said. But he did not think they would get far unless they also enjoyed mathematics. These two subjects, today, went hand in hand. Although high school boys might think they were past tables, hr would urge them to practise in their spare moments. Everything that followed would be easier.
