RACING ROVER RELEGATED TO SECOND

Protest In Canterbury Cup Upheld

Form followers had setbacks all along the line on the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton yesterday. Six winners paid double-figure dividends and Rover, the only favourite to come out on top, lost first place to Shoal at an inquiry after the Canterbury Cup.

Rover, a rather unlucky fifth in the New Zealand Derby, was a strong favourite for the Canterbury Cup, carrying £3593 in a win pool of £11,210 10s. He led into the last furlong of the club’s oldestestablished race and beat Shoal by half a length, but an inquiry was started after Shoal’s owner, Mr J. F. Tutton, lodged an objection. He alleged interference with Shoal by Rover in the straight.

The committee found that the interference by Rover had affected Shoal’s chances, but decided in the circumstances that no blame was attachable to Rover’s jockey, N. Eastwood.

Shoal was the 8. 7 favourite in a field of nine and paid £l7 14s fid for a win.

Shoal was unplaced in eight earlier starts this season though there was fair merit in her eighth in the New Zealand Cup last Saturday. Rover could not have started the race in the best of humour. He showed a dislike for his starting stall, lashing out for some time at the strap on the back. He was freed and was sent to the outside but the start was delayed further when Flair straddled the outside of his stall. Rover mastered the Derby winner William Paul going to the furlong but was then strongly challenged by Shoal. Rover showed the utmost gameness in coping with Shoal’s challenge, but he shifted ground toward the outside. The inquiry was an extended one, and the result of it was not known until after the seventh race.

Teaka made a successful first appearance at the meeting in the Fendalton Handicap. He was the third favourite and won handily by three parts of a length from Motueka. That margin slightly ■ flattered Motueka. though he i stayed clear of Mananui, the best ; of the others. This was Teaka’s second win in j open company for his Riccarton owner, Mr C. L. Smith. His first j was against the sprinters at Ash- ■ burton in September. Teaka is a four-year-old gelding by Kurdistan from Aganev trained at Riccarton by W. A. Welton. He was ridden by R. J. Skelton. Cornflake did not endear himself to a number of the patrons when he won the Jockey Club Handicap, the second leg of the double. He got there by a head from the favourite, India, and some people around the birdcage called for action because of the Lo Zingaro gelding’s weak run—he was last —in the Riccarton Handicap on the first day of the 1 meeting. Holders of 2202 5s tickets (434 ■ on-course) on the Teaka —Corn- : flake combination received £lll ; 19s 6d for £l. The doubles pool amounted to : £74,595 and Teaka carried £7197 1 10s. There was light rain about half ; way through the programme but the track was not noticeably affected. The on-course totalisator turnover was £79.188, including £8502 10s on the double, compared with £71,994 10s for the second day last year. The off-course total of £152,121 was an increase of £22.051 10s on the corresponding day last year. Canterbury Cup Rover was hotly chllenged by Shoal inside the furlong in the Canterbury Cup. but responded very gamelv under energetic handling from N. Eastwood and beat his older rival by half a length. William Paul ran past Gibraltar into the lead after two furlongs, and R. J. Skelton then slackened the pace on the Derby winner almost to a crawl. Most of the others were pulling then, and Writer, one of them, went into a short lead about seven and a half furlongs out but William Paul had his head alongside the pacemakers girth going to the half-mile. Rover had moved through earlier and was third three-quarters of a length behind William Paul. Next were Flair and Gibraltar, then Copenhagen. Canon. Shoal, and Court Jester. Writer and Rover came to the straight almost in line with William Paul, which was on the inner. Gibraltar was a length back, and Shoal was moving through, but in a Rover shook off a determined challenge from William Paul, but the had no respite. Shoal then came strongly at the three-year-old on the outside, but was held by half a le WHliam Paul, weakening slightly, was a length and a half back third. He had a length and a half to spare from Gibraltar. The weakening Writer was fifth, not far behind, but well clear of Copenhagen, Court Jester. Flair, and Canon. The First Leg Teaka joined Motueka in the lead outside the furlong in the Fendalton Handicap and had the race won in a few’ powerful strides. He did not have to give of one of his best gallops to bet Motueka by threequarters of a length. Mananui and the favourite. Balfast. were strong finishers for third and fourth, but never had Teaka within challengine distance in the straight. Teaka nad five runners, including Mananui and Balfast behind him at the seven furlongs. Peril was then in front and the pace was not strong. Teaka moved quickly from the half-mile and was not far behind Peril. Bob wood. Treasure Pond. Motueka. and Demand on the home turn. Motueka got to the front soon after, but the long-striding Teaka was quickly alongside. Ridden hands and heels, Teaka quickly settled Motueka’s chance and won handily. Motueka had a length and a half to spare from Mananui. The last furlong was Mananui's best; he Lad a stronger finish than Balfast. which was under pressure outside the furlong. The weakening Peril was fifth tw’o lengths clear of Gay Mood. Gay Mood was clear of Demand. Leprechaun. Pilot Light, Treasure Pond. Bobwood. Royal Warrant, and Cassius. Leprechaun pulled up lame. Cornflake Beats Favourite Cornflake ran up close to the leaders about five wide on the home turn in the Jockey Club Handicap and lasted for a head victory after a tough battle w’ith the favourite. India. India challenged from the ruck closer to the inside of th*> track. Cashmere led Skylight, Libam,

Palace, Nairn Bridge. Bugle Boy, Innesfell'. Dhofar, and Cornflake to the six furlongs. Keep Time and Cornflake improved their positions going to the halfmile and on the home turn they were almost making a line with Cashmere and Skylight in the lead. Positions changed quickly going to the furlong, but the finish took on a definite pattern when India squeezed through to challenge Cornflake. They ran away from the others. Cornflake just lasting to beat the Hastings miler. Prince Filou, w’hicli w'as well back just behind India five furlongs out, finished boldly for third two lengths back. Palace, which had trailed, was a neck back fourth ahead of Naim Bridge, Liban, Innesfell, Bugle Boy. Dhofar, Keep Time. Princess Neptune, Cashmere. Skylight, County Fermanagh, and Assembly.
