CABLE UNDER HARBOUR

Arrangements For Telephones

A submarine telephone cable is expected to be laid under the Lyttelton Harbour soon. It will reach from Magazine Bay to Church Bay. The cable will serve Diamond Harbour residents, and will eventually provide the junction circuits for the future Diamond Harbour telephone exchange to Christchurch central exchange, which will be the parent exchange. The cable, which will be installed by the Post and Telegraph Deparment, is on the Waitemata, which is expected at Lyttelton this week-end. The coastal scow Motu will be used to lay the cable, and it is expected to arrive at the end of next week.

The laying work should be started by November 23. It will be done at high tide and should be completed in two hours if the weather is fine.
