Plan To Control Po Floods
(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) ROME, November 12. An emergency plan to plug the breaches in sea walls and dykes along Italy’s biggest river, the Po. which has flooded about 15.000 acres of rich farmland in the last 48 hours, went into operation today. The plan, and a break in the bad weather, have removed the threat of really widespread flooding. said the Interior Undersecretary (Mr Angelo Salizzeni). Closing the breaches as soon as possible is part of the emergency plan. Another aim is to build high banks around the flood areas to stop the water spreading to large towns and villages. Fishing boats, private craft, customs launches, and two helicopters have been brought in to evacuate about 5000 people from the area and refugee centres have been opened in the lower reaches of the Po Valley.
