Ships Find No Trace

The aircraft carrier, Philippine Sea, flanked by 15 other ships, followed the flight path of the missing Pan American stratocruiser in a “vacuum cleaner’’ [search today for a trace of the [aeroplane which vanished with 44 persons aboard last Friday. ■ The surface vessels, stationed 15 miles apart in a 200-mile line. I moved slowly down the last I known route of the missing airliner as aircraft, including helicopters and jets, flew overhead. . Hopes of finding any of the '.missing persons alive were fading '.fast and Commander William E. Chapline, the Coast Guard search i chief, said last night’s search operations again failed to produce i“a single concrete clue.’’
