MR J. D. BURNS

The death occurred recently of Mr Joseph Downes Burns, youngest son of Thomas and Marion Burns, early pioneers of the West Coast. Born at Kaniere, Mr Burns joined the Post and Telegraph Department at Hokitika in 1907. and shortly after transferred to Wellington. He served in World War I with the New Zealand Wireless Troop, and on his return from overseas resumed duty with the department in Wellington. He was later transferred to Chi istchurch as supervisor, to Hokitika as senior supervisor, and again to Christchurch from where he retired in 1952. from the position of superintendent of the telegraph branch. Mr Burns was a representative on the Post and Telegraph Appeal Board, and a delegate of the Post and Telegraph Association. He is survived by his wife and l four sons.
