Shipping Lines’ Payment
NEW YORK. November 12. Judge Lawrence, in the Federal Court today, gave permission to the Italian Lines and Swedish-American Lines to proceed with the payment of about 6.000.000 dollars in claims from the sinking of the liner Andrea Doria. The two lines reported that the amounts of compensation had been settled in nearly 70 per cent, of the 1468 claims. The Italian Lines’ Andrea Doria sank off the Massachusetts coast on July 25, 1956, after being involved in a collision with Swed-ish-American's Stockholm. Judge Walsh praised the companies for their speed in reaching settlements. "Not only is the quickness with which these claims are being cleaned up commendable, but it is the first time in my experience that companies are actually chasing claimants in order to make settlements,” he;
