RECORD SHEEP ENTRIES AT ASHBURTON SHOW

Warm sunshine after several overcast days favoured the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show yesterday.

Sheep entries were a record at 639, some 44 entries more than the record set at last year's show. The fall in total entries from 2391 last year to 2202 yesterday has been attributed to fewer entries in the school handcrafts section. Gate takings at £609 were an average figure, though £22 10s below last year's record.

Some of the Southdowns compared very favourably with sheep he had seen at the recent Royal Show, Mr T. Weilly. of Winton, the section judge, considered. Some of the natural condition sheep were showing the effects of wet weather and dust. Classes were strong and though a few sheep created a tail, the overall standard was good, he said. Mr J. D. Galpin’s champion ewe was very good, but it was beginning to show its age.

“1 would like to see more competition in the Corriedale section,” Mr D. S. Johns, of Culverden. commented after judging that section. 111-thrift had probably been the cause of a slight fallingoff, but the top sheep were well up to Metropolitan standards. The natural condition ewes had been a particularly good class. Mr Johns said he was disappointed in that several good sheep had had to be put down because of faulty mouths. Border Leicesters, an important class at the Ashburton show, were the best for several years, said the judge. Mr J. Grant, of Invercargill. He described the champion ram as "a creature with a strong Border head, a very nice carcase and a wonderful fleece.” The reserve and champion ewes were very close, the decision on placing being made on the fleece, which might mean a transposition in their placing if they should meet in competition again. The winning unhoused hogget owned by Mr H. M. Copland would’ probably be placed in any metropolitan show, Mr Grant said. “On the whole the Romneys made up a very strong section, the prize-winners comparing fav- • ourably with winners at larger shows,” said the judge, Mr G. S. : Giddings, of Fairlie. The chamI pion and reserve champion rams ; were good specimens with plenty lof masculinity. The champion : and reserve champion ewes were ; also good specimens. “However, a lot of the sheep were too short in ■ the body and their tail settings (were entirely wrong,” Mr Gid- ‘ dings said. A very good standard with very little tail was set in the Ryelands : section, according to Mr Adam Biggar, the judge. Competition this !ye

■ year was between three breeders, compared with four or five usually. The wool of some sheep had been discoloured by the weather, he said. The champion ram, owned by Mr G. E. Gumbrell, was an excellent type and the champion ewe, shown by Mr G. H. Burrows, was very good, the judge considered. A future at metropolitan level was ahead of a shorn ewe hogget owned by B. F. and M. D. Rooney, he said. The Merinos were well brought out. the judge. Mr J. P. Buchanan, of Mount Somers, said. The Ayrshire cattle were generally a fairly good representation of their breed, the judge. Mr C. Heywood, of Springston, considered. The young cattle were disappointing, with the exception of a yearling heifer owned by Mr C. R. Moriarty, which would go a long way in show competition, the judge said. The condition of the stock was fairly good in places but the cold weather had been against the breeders, he said. Mr D. M. Brown, of Temuka, said that in 20 years he had not been disappointed by the showing of milking shorthorns at Ashburton: great credit was due to •the breeders. Some excellent j females had been shown. Jumping Uniformly Good The international jump over an excellent course was uniformly good, said Mr R. R. Jordan, of Fairlie. the judge. He suggested that a little more greenery would improve the jumps. None of the new hunters who had come before him were up to the standard of what he called “the veterans”; these were as good as ever. The hacks with one or two ex-

ceptions tiad been a disappointment. They showed a lack of hard work by owners, Mr Jordan said. More dressage would be : necessary before they could take j their places with horses from North Island shows. The champion hack, “Full Fire,” ridden by R. Bethell, was a new horse to the judge, and he was very pleased with its rein, movements. and ride. * “Glimmer.” the reserve champion, shown by Miss A. Hargraves, was in a particularly meritorious position, as it j performed equally as well as a i jumper, said Mr Jordan. Results:— SHEEP Merino (Judees: Fine and medium combing classes. Mr J. P.
